CHARACTER NAME: Jev Wynnchild
AGE: 32
APPEARANCE: Maggie Q is the PlayBy. Picture Here
BRIEF WORLD INFO: Though there is much within this world; magic, dragons, political intrigue, Jev knows only the northern island-country of Kiektane, so that's where I will focus.
It's something like Iceland; a geologically active above-water meeting of two tectonic plates. The resulting mountain range, which cuts along southwest to northeast of the country, splits the two dominant races; the Kintoq and the Crotau.
There are only niggling differences between the two races, such as cultural and traditional practices. They've mostly been engaged in various border and territory wars, increasing in intensity as industry progresses. In the current era, they predominantly fight with sabers, spears, and bows and arrows (although the Crotau are on the edge of discovering how to make gunpowder).
The greatest conflict is over a series of caves converging in the middle of the mountain range; centuries old, magically reinforced, their walls are filled with carvings, bas relief, adorned with jewels and metals, that outlines a prophecy. The actual story has been lost through the ages, but it remains both a spiritual and political importance; much faith and theorizing is placed in the carvings, and the magical properties make it an ideal stronghold for the governing seat. Currently, it is in the possession of the Kintoq.
The Kintoq social structure is a monarchy over a series of tribes; numbering greatest near the center of the territory and growing more sparse the farther out towards the shorelines. Representatives from important interior political bloodlines are often sent out to oversee the outer tribes, to bring news, training, and collect tariffs.
The family structure is a strict tradition that hasn't changed much over the years; The first three Children are Ranked; firstborn is referred to as Key Child; they carry the name of the family line, tasked with staying within and maintaining their lands. Firstborns never marry Firstborns, and it is only the firstborn's name that is passed on. All names are considered uni-gendered, so even if the firstborn is Female, and their first child is Male, he would carry his mother's name.
Second-Born is the War Child. They remain nameless until they are sent off for training when they are seven, where they receive sounds instead of names; something short and precise that can be easily called out in the middle of a battlefield. They do not carry their surname and usually only ever marry other War children.
Third-Born is the Swiftling. They act as messengers between the Key Child and the central government. Fourth- and beyond are trained in all areas (outside of the Key-, War-Children, and Swiftlings) until they find a Talent, and are then sectioned off accordingly. In a best case scenario, these are the children that would grow to impress and marry a Firstborn in another tribe, or provide a home to Swiftlings between their home and government (as such, it is not uncommon for Swiftlings to have many partners along a single road, especially in the further reaches of the country).
It is possible to change one's rank later on in life, but this mostly happens between later-borns; art to metal work, or cobbler to brewer. The responsibility ties the first three born to their ranks, and as their initial training and tutelage differed from Fourth-born on, it is rare for a switch there to happen.
**Note: This might be a little confusing, but the firstborn child to any rank not an Key-born is considered a War-Child. Only Firstborn can bear Key-Children.
Despite castes and polygamy, married pairs are expected to uphold a cherished loyalty to each other; a mentality of 'honor thy love like thy country, traitors be hung and treason dealt a swift blow'. Additionally, family bonds - whether through blood, marriage, or war training - are considered equally treasured.
Justice is considered just as seriously, and nothing - not even death - can excuse a convicted from their trial. In the cases that the accused cannot physically make the trial, a mobile unit is dispatched with a judge and deciding committee to see out the trial where-ever they can, and usually verdicts are come buy within a few hours. Even an accused who is proven innocent bears is considered cursed for the rest of their life. Those who die before their trial often have next of kin or dear friends step up to take their place, despite involvement in the crime.
BRIEF CHARACTER HISTORY:
Jev was born Orjetterix, Fourth child of Wynn. She was quiet and serious, but excelled in music and was given the rank Song Child when she was thirteen and deemed very talented. She was not happy, however, and after witnessing an attack on her tribe from the Crotau, and the response from the War Children stationed there, she felt that was her calling instead. She sought for a Rank Change, and underwent grueling and lengthy interviews over the better part of a year with varying councils and political powers until her case found her in the central government. It was unheard of for any later-born to want to join the War-Children, and she would not be swayed otherwise.
When she was seventeen, she finally won over, and was placed within a training camp under a new tutor who was proving to lead with a strict and heavy hand; Fu. Both Fu and Jev (the sound she was given at the camp), were being tested; Jev they expected to drop out and return to her life as a Song-Child, and they wanted Fu to cut his teeth on what they considered a guaranteed weakling.
Jev was determined, and Fu saw her potential, and despite a rocky beginning they overcame the challenges placed on them by others. At twenty-three, Jev was fighting along side him. At twenty-five, they fell in love. For the next seven years, they traveled along the border and racked up countless victories (and what defeats they had they suffered graciously). They became legendary for the way they fought in battle, working together as if they were one being instead of two. They were considered the ultimate ideal for romance, and warriors.
At thirty-one, Jev gave birth to their own War-Child, Fex. She shelved her sword and stayed at home to raise him, as Fu went back on the battlefield to continue the war against the Crotau. A year later, he died on the battlefield amid suspicious circumstances.
His body was never found, but his broken saber and a packet of notes, maps, and etchings, were given over to Jev.
In the aftermath of his death, it was revealed that he had been on a personal mission, which the notes had been collected for. He had initially taken it to the king for permission to pursue - and had been denied, and carried on regardless. It was also discovered that he had kept this information secret from Jev, and that she knew he was keeping something from her and didn't pry. He was put on trial for treason against his wife and his country, but because he was dead, Jev volunteered to take his place. Fex was given over to her sister to care for, and Jev was exiled. She took with her his items, including the packet of notes, and devoted herself to finishing his task (albeit in Crotau territory, and despite knowing nothing of Fu's original intentions).
PERSONALITY: Jev's strongest attributes are her sense of self, justice, and loyalty. She is also defined by her fighting, and, however much she is loath to admit it, her singing.
At a young age, she already knew she was not going to be happy with the Talent ascribed to her. Once she saw a real battle taking place, she knew instantly where she would feel comfortable with herself. She does things decisively, and without regret, and should it ever turn into a disaster, or turn out to be the wrong decision, she will meet her consequences with a humble and contrite heart. She does not showboat or posture. She is open to debate, but when her mind is made up, there is no undoing it.
Growing up in the society that she did, she's got a very black and white worldview; the strangest concepts to her would be the ones that don't fit under 'yes or no' or 'good or bad'. She will, however, commit 'bad' acts in order to come by 'good' results, and will always stand to her decisions and take what punishments are deemed necessary (and, should these acts go by unpunished, she fasts instead, or pulls extra labor. However it is done, she sees that punishment is wrought).
Her loyalty to those she deems friends and family is iron-clad. She forgives faults easily, will step in for a friend readily, and will wreak havoc on those that do them wrong. It will, however, take people time and persistence to get in her good graces. She sees everyone as a neutral until they do something that tips her mental scales to seeing them as a friend or enemy. She is protective of her friends. She is respectful of her enemies.
Jev's training has made her a fierce warrior. Although she was never the strongest, or most clever, neither having the cleanest killing blow or best strategy, she has a persistence and enduring work ethic to always practice, always improve, and always push herself to do her best and better.
Her musical talent, although perhaps not as refined as it could have been, is still very much a part of her. She is slow to demonstrate, however, thinking it a pointless endeavor and not liking the attention it garnered among her own people. She feels much more accomplished as a warrior, that she's actually doing something to help, whereas as a singer, she feels frivolous.
ABILITIES:
Jev is lean and muscled, and does her best to maintain her physique (including maintaining a training regimen throughout her pregnancy). Her movements are swift and precise, if not overly agile. She fights best with something to her back (since she got used to fighting back to back with Fu), using a Saber for close, swift combat.
She is knowledgeable in spear work, although she prefers to keep her enemies close enough to punch or kick, and though she can make a bow and arrow, she can't aim worth a damn.
POSSESSIONS:
She wears furs and leathers to cover her entire body against the cold; thick boots, pants, a couple layers of shirts, and a heavy coat and gloves. She wears a hood made of a wolf-head fitted with a pair of antlers, carved and painted with runes with the intention to intimidate.
Weapons she carries are a long knife along the strap of her travel-pack, and two sabers sheathed to her waist, one of which contains only the hilt and first few inches of a broken blade. In her travel-pack are the notes and maps from Fu, collected throughout an indeterminable amount of time and containing writing in many different hands, from many different eras. Some are in languages she cannot even read.
She also carries a whetstone for her blades, a few basic aid materials, and some dried meat, hardloafs, and a full waterskin, but how long that lasts on the Charon is anyone's guess.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
I am Jev. [She doesn't get this device, but someone's taught her the basics, so she is talking into it like they suggested. She has a thick accent, and the name 'Jev' comes out like a bark, almost, short and sharp. She also doesn't realize it's recording video of her, although her expression probably wouldn't have changed if she had been aware.]
I am new. I need information; will trade services.
I am room [--insert proper room number here--]
Thank you. [She closes her eyes and gives her head a low nod, an instinctive reaction to ending a conversation politely.]
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Jev perches herself on a coil of rope on deck, looking around to get a sense of who else is up top today before settling cross-legged and pulling out her long knife and a whetstone. It probably didn't need sharpening at all; she hadn't had anything to cut it on, recently, and if she thought back she could envision the last time she had done the maintenance on it.
Still, it was a comforting motion, and between watching the stone slide across the blade, feeling their textures travel up her arm, and listen to the shhnk, shhnk sound of it, she fell into a deep concentration that eventually drowned out the strange life around her.
How had she gotten here? Many had tried to explain it, but no one had succeeded in saying anything that made any sense, yet. This wasn't Death. Death changed you. She wasn't changed. Everything else was changed.
She made a low noise of frustration in the back of her throat as her whetstone skipped slightly over a burr in the metal. It brought her momentarily out of her musings, and she made a quick glance around before bending closer over her work and focusing on the nicked section.
"I am not made for this world. It makes no sense."
